SHAKA ZULU The Lion of the Zulu Kingdom
Shaka Zulu was one of the greatest military leaders in African history. Born in the early 1800s in present-day South Africa, he transformed the small Zulu clan into a powerful kingdom feared across Southern Africa.
Before Shaka, warriors fought mostly with throwing spears from a distance. Shaka changed warfare completely. He introduced the short stabbing spear called the iklwa and trained warriors to fight face-to-face in deadly formations. His famous “Bull Horn Formation” surrounded enemies from the front and sides before crushing them completely. Despite his victories, Shaka became feared even within his kingdom. In 1828, he was assassinated by his own half-brothers after years of brutal leadership and political tension.
