Long before Europeans fully invaded West Africa, the Kingdom of Dahomey stood as one of the strongest military powers in the region. Located in present-day Benin Republic, the kingdom grew through trade, conquest, and fearsome warriors.
But among Dahomey’s armies was something the world had rarely seen before: an army made entirely of women.
Some were recruited as young girls from villages across the kingdom. Others were prisoners, hunters, or women who showed unusual strength and bravery. Once chosen, their old lives ended.
The king became their only family.
The women trained under brutal conditions: 1. climbing thorn walls barefoot, 2. surviving in forests for days, 3. fighting with machetes and rifles, 4. and learning how to kill without hesitation.
Pain was considered weakness.
Fear was forbidden.
They were taught that death in battle was more honorable than surrender.
Soon, neighboring kingdoms began whispering stories about them.
Women who marched like thunder. Women who smiled before battle. Women who charged directly into enemy gunfire.
European visitors who later witnessed them were shocked by their discipline and fearlessness.
The world would eventually call them:
“The Dahomey Amazons.”
But to Dahomey… they were simply warriors.
