Long after the death of Shaka Zulu, the kingdom he built still stood strong across southern Africa.
The Zulu army remained feared. The Zulu people remained proud. And their lands remained independent.
But by the late 1800s, a new danger had arrived.
The British Empire.
Britain had already taken control of large parts of southern Africa. They wanted more land, more trade routes, more minerals, and complete control over the region.
At the center of their expansion stood the Zulu Kingdom.
At that time, the Zulu king was King Cetshwayo kaMpande.
Unlike Shaka Zulu, Cetshwayo did not seek massive expansion. He mainly wanted to protect Zulu independence and avoid unnecessary war.
